Tramadol High
Can a person get high taking tramadol? The answer is yes and no. The reason that the answer is both is because each person's body processes the drug differently. What makes one person high may not make another high. The reason for this could be something as simple as a high tolerance to drugs and another could be that they are not able to properly metabolize the drug to reach the Mu receptors in the brain.
When a person IS able to get high taking tramadol, the drug interacts with the Mu receptors in the brain which produce pain relieving endorphins. The tramadol stimulates these receptors to produce more of the endorphins. The more tramadol, the more the body produces the endorphins. If enough endorphins are produced, the individual may experience euphoria or the sense of being high.
In most cases, this high can last for up to 12 hours on a single dose. A typical dose of tramadol is either 50mg or 100mg every 4 to 6 hours. If a person is not receiving enough of the drug to eliminate the pain by taking this dosage, they will tend to increase the dose until they achieve that level of euphoria. The dose to reach a euphoric state varies from person to person. Some reports show that a person can achieve euphoric effects with as little as a single 200mg dose. Others require at least 500mg to achieve the same effect. One should consider that the recommended maximum daily dose of tramadol is 600mg.
Most people who increase their dose of tramadol do not intend to get high from it. They just want to relieve their pain. What happens is that these people over medicate themselves and experience this euphoria and continue at this dose to keep this experience. Over time their body will build up a tolerance to the tramadol and require more to achieve the same effect. There IS a risk of higher doses of tramadol. Seizures have been known to be a negative side effect of higher doses.
My personal experience with tramadol spans a period of 7 years. I don't really get high from taking it. I just take enough to take the edge off the pain which is 100mg in the morning and 50mg every couple of hours or so. This amount just allows me to relax and not notice any pain. It just mellows me out.
